Bill Jikai Greenberg This course will cover the development of Mahayana Buddhism and its core tenets and concerns in India. We will examine Nagarjuna’s development of Prajnaparamita, the Madhyamika and Cittamatra (Yogacara, Mind Only) Schools and a review of key texts such as the Lotus Sutra, the Avatasaka collection and the Vimalakirti Sutra, an outrageous, scatological and humorous fore-runner to Zen. Come to think of it, these all are provocative out-cries of rebels, revolutionaries and sainted vagabonds. Fee: $35- members; $45-non-members.

Commuters Zazen/Street Retreat in Paterson, NJ 3pm Friday, July 25 to 11am Sunday, June 27 Join Sensei Genki along with Sensei Genro Gauntt for a commuters zazen and street retreat in Paterson. On Friday, we will sit zazen with Genki and Genro at the zendo, then go home for the night. We’ll be back at the zendo early Saturday morning to sit until the afternoon. Then we will leave all but an ID card at the Zendo and plunge into the life and streets of Paterson with just the clothes on our back and the pavement as our beds. We will eat in soup kitchens and beg for money or food at times when soup kitchens are not open. We will sleep outdoors or in abandoned housing, though not in shelters since there are not enough beds. We don’t say we’re homeless; we’re simply living on the streets for 24 hours, relying on the generosity of the streets to take care of us. This is a powerful practice of not-knowing and bearing witness, where the unpredictable life on the streets is the main teacher. More Info.
Beginners Zazen Wednesdays, 7 pm - 8 pm. Led by Rev. Cyndi Seiho Brighton. Shorter zazen periods followed by a group discussion. All new sitters and those needing shorter periods are welcome to attend.
